Snapdragon Tech Summit. This is one of my favorite moments of the year, because it’s when we get to share our newest innovations with the world, including today’s unveiling of the Snapdragon 865 and Snapdragon 765 Mobile Platforms. We’re excited for how both of these 5G platforms will help us scale in 2020.

5G is here, and we have a lot to unpack at the Summit. This is the first year of 5G commercialization, and already more than 40 operators launched 5G networks and more than 40 OEMs announced 5G devices, many of which are already available and providing blazing fast multi-gigabit speeds to consumers. This rollout is significantly faster than 4G, where just four operators and three OEMs launched in the first year. What’s even more exciting is that Snapdragon is the leading platform powering commercial 5G smartphones around the world. OEMs are tapping Qualcomm Technologies for the very best to power their 5G products, and we have over 230 design wins. I had very high hopes for 5G’s rollout, but what’s happening is exceeding all expectations. It’s the fastest G transition we’ve ever seen.

While this progress is impressive, Qualcomm Technologies’ work is far from done; we want to get 5G into the hands of everyone. One of our main focuses is supporting the capabilities that will make it possible for more operators to launch 5G faster. We recently introduced the Snapdragon Modular Platforms, which offer a complete end-to-end solution and reduce 5G complexity for any of our OEM customers that want to incorporate 5G functionality into their devices. We’re also continuing the advancement of mmWave, massive MIMO, and 5G fixed wireless access (FWA), which is designed to bring 5G access to the “last mile” of connectivity. Finally, we created the world’s most advanced modem-to-antenna solution, the Snapdragon X55 5G Modem-RF System. And we’re already on our second generation of 5G technology designs. As global deployments of launched networks begin to mature, we’ll start to see the benefits of the full 5G experience where sub-6GHz and mmWave technology are combined.

Looking to 2020, we see 5G momentum accelerating with rapid rollouts in other regions around the world, in addition to the continued coverage growth in existing regions. mmWave technology will bring massive bandwidth to Korea and Japan, and in the United States, three of four carriers are expected to expand this breakthrough networking technology. We’re projecting that more than 200 million 5G smartphones will ship in this coming year alone. 2020 is the year 5G goes mainstream.

This 5G proliferation will soon move beyond mobile to transform industries around the world. According to our updated 5G economy report from IHS Markit, 5G deployments will positively affect virtually every sector. Advancements in auto, extended reality (XR), artificial intelligence (AI), the industrial internet of things (IIot), and more are on the horizon. The innovations 5G enables in these fields will not only enrich our lives, but also significantly boost our global economy. IHS Markit estimates that 5G will enable $13.2 trillion in global sales enablement* by 2035. Additionally, the global 5G value chain is expected to generate $3.6 trillion in economic output by 2035, while supporting 22.3 million jobs.

I’m so proud of what we’ve accomplished alongside the entire mobile ecosystem, and I look forward to the continued success of 5G. As this next generation of wireless continues to roll out across the world, it will open new and exciting opportunities to connect, compute, and communicate in ways we’ve yet to imagine. 5G has unlocked an era of accelerated innovation — an era we call the Invention Age, when we lead the entire ecosystem forward and show the world that the impossible is now possible.
