Gantt charts were invented by American engineer Henry Laurence Gantt in the early 20th century. They were inspired by the pursuit of production efficiency during the Industrial Revolution and the rise of scientific management theories. Gantt charts reflect the core relationship between tasks and time in production. They were initially designed to help managers better plan and monitor production progress.

The Evolution of Gantt Chart Creation
Initially, Gantt charts were manually drawn on blackboards in the early 20th century, with a simple structure of tasks on the vertical axis and time on the horizontal axis. In the 1980s and 1990s, the advent of Excel made electronic creation more convenient, and even today, there are still many tutorials for creating Gantt charts using Excel. In 2003, the Gantt chart tool GanttProject was launched and widely adopted. In 2024, WeChat for Enterprise introduced its Smart Spreadsheet, which automatically supports Gantt charts through a view-based interface, significantly reducing the usage threshold and cost for users

Reflections on Productivity Tools
While tools continue to evolve, the fundamental structure of displaying the three core project management elements—tasks, time, and progress—on a single plane remains unchanged. For average users, the barrier to using tools will gradually decrease. The skills associated with specific tools are not always best practices. Embracing technological changes and actively exploring new tools is a better way to keep pace with the times. For tool developers, user experience and ecosystem development are key. For example, WeChat for Enterprise has built an ecosystem around group chat-based office tools, including email, online documents, and smart spreadsheets. Similarly, Yuque integrates powerful editors for Word, Excel, flowcharts, and mind maps into a one-stop service, all aimed at enhancing the tool ecosystem.
