Stephen Mann is Professor of Chemistry, co-Director of the MaxPlanck-Bristol Centre for Minimal Biology, Director of the Centre foOrganized Matter Chemistry and Director of the Centre for ProtolifeResearch at the University of Bristol, UK, Prof Mann is a founder obiomimetic materials chemistry and is distinguished for contributions tobiomineralization, bioinspired materials chemistry and protocelresearch. His research interests are focused on the chemical synthesischaracterization and emergence of complex forms of organized matter.including models of protocell assembly

Recent progress in the chemical construction of compartmentalized semipermeable microscale objects comprising embodied cytc-mimetic functions is paving the way towards rudimentary forms ofartificial cell-like materials (protocells/prototissues) as a step toward-s future proto-living technologies.This talk will highlight simple forms of individuated and collec-tive behaviour in synthetic protocells and protocell communities.Brief examples of the application of protocells at the synthetic cell/-iving cell interface will also be discussed.
