Start An Electric Journey

Electric Dough,

In this module of First Code Junior series, we introduce an interesting tool for learning about science and computer hardware - Electric Dough. Electric Dough is a special dough that conducts electricity. Students make creative projects and experiments to learn about electricity, circuits, and the related scientific principles behind these experiments!

By playing with Electric Dough, students will learn various components and concepts in circuit electronics. Students will also gain better insights in how electricity works under instructor’s guidance, and they will understand better how electronic devices work in our daily lives!

Learn Beyond the Screen: Osmo & Blocks-Based Coding

The objective of this course is to introduce coding fundamentals and concepts to young imaginative minds. Students will use Osmo, an interactive and highly-visible iPad application that develops logical thinking and problem solving skill. Osmo is created by a team at Northwestern University and the interactive game makes the app one of the easiest way for students to learn block-based programming. It prepares students to become innovative creators in the future.

Students will guide characters to solve puzzles using simple coding concepts such as: sequences, loops and functions. Coding with physical blocks enables students to easily plan and visualize their projects. In addition to Osmo, students will also learn coding with an iPad based app called Daisy the Dinosaur, through which they will intuitively grasp the basics of objects, sequencing, loops and events by solving this app's challenge.

Hardware Exploration

This course aims to instill the concept that technology is a creator’s tool to young curious minds. Technology is much more than the smartphones and tablets that they are used to seeing. Through fun hardware projects and games, the students learn and experiment conductivity, input/output, sensors, logic, design and much more. Utilizing advanced and innovative educational tools such as LittleBits, Makey Makey and Circuit Scribe, students will come to understand technology as a tool to solve problems and create useful things. By the end of the course, our students would have moved beyond playing and using computers and appliances, and begin to see what goes on behind the electronic devices they see everyday.
