US terror attacks are increasingly motivated by right-wing views

The number of attacks on US soil jumped from 6 in 2007 to 65 in 2017. The number of fatalities has also increased. That goes against a global decrease in terror attacks in recent years.

The series of explosive devices found this week further illustrates that growing threat. Packages were mailed to George Soros, Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and CNN, with reports of similar mail sent to former attorney general Eric Holder and the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Those figures are often the target of attacks by Donald Trump, his inner circle, and Republicans, which in turn fuel conspiracy-minded right-wing activists. Authorities have yet to find the person responsible for the packages and are still investigating.

An analysis of the Global Terrorism Database by researchers at the University of Maryland shows a spike in the share of attacks by right-wing extremists, from 6% in the 2000s to 35% in the 2010s.
