I want to share a small guitar hack with you that I often use when composing new riffs, it really helps to spark creativity and discover innovative new tunings. The essence of this of trick is to place the notes where you need them by altering the tuning of the strings, usually it starts with changing just one.

The most simple method is the widely known as drop ‘D’ tuning, let’s take a look at the exercise below. Here, I can’t reach the ‘F’ and ‘G’ on the low ‘E’ string, so I’ll simply tune the string down to ‘D’ and can now conveniently play this riff.

Most guitarist are familiar with drop ‘D’ tuning, but try applying the same idea to other strings too and you will discover new sounds and possibilities. Take the C#m7 chord for example, we’ve used it before but imagine we would want to make same the chord shape sound different. Let’s take a Sus2 chord for example, normally you would then stretch your fingers, but there is another option - especially if you need some fingers elsewhere! Simply tune the ‘G’ string up to ‘A’, now you’ll be able to fret the chord by using a regular power-chord shape. If you’re afraid to tune the ‘G’ string up a whole step, you can also tune all the other strings down. This gives you the same sound, but it’ll take just a bit more work ;).
