Join us for a dialogue with Dr. Ashley Llorens, Vice President, Distinguished Scientist & Managing Director of Outreach at Microsoft research, and Professor Xue Lan, Dean of Schwarzman College, for a discussion of the collaboration that we need for the next stages of AI development. The discussion will cover possibilities for cross-disciplinary cooperation, approaches to talent development, and an explaination of why our AI-enabled future requires work that crosses borders and regions. Dr. Xing Xie, Senior Research Manager at Microsoft Research Asia, will first moderate a conversation with our panelists and then take questions from our audience.

阿什利·洛伦斯(Ashley Llorens)

Vice President, Distinguished Scientist

& Managing Director of Outreach,

Microsoft Research

Ashley leads global outreach team at Microsoft Research (MSR) – the team’s mission is to amplify the impact of research at Microsoft and to advance the cause of science and technology research around the world. Together, the outreach team drives strategy and execution for MSR engagement with the rest of Microsoft and with the broader science and technology community. Outreach team invests in high-impact collaborative research projects on behalf of the company, create pipelines for diverse, world-class talent, and generate awareness of the current and envisioned future impact of science and technology research.

Prior to joining Microsoft, Ashley served as the founding chief of the Intelligent Systems Center at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), where he directed research and development in artificial intelligence (AI), robotics and neuroscience and created APL’s first enterprise-wide AI strategy and technology roadmap. During his two decades at APL, he led interdisciplinary teams in developing novel AI technologies from concept to real-world application with a focus on autonomous systems. Ashley’s background is in machine learning and signal processing and current research interests include reinforcement learning for real-world systems, machine decision-making under uncertainty, human-machine teaming, and practical AI safety.

As a subject matter expert in AI and autonomous systems, he has served on advisory boards and strategic studies for the U.S. Department of Defense, the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Academy of Sciences. He was recently nominated by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy to serve as an AI expert on the Global Partnership on AI and was elected to serve as the Science Representative on its inaugural steering committee. Alongside his career in engineering, he has pursued a parallel career as a hip-hop artist and serve as a voting member of the Recording Academy, the institution that organizes the Grammys.

薛澜(Lan Xue)

Dean of Schwarzman College,

Tsinghua University

Dr. Lan Xue is Distinguished Professor of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences and the Dean of Schwarzman College at Tsinghua University, where he also serves as the Director of Institute for AI International Governance, Director of China Institute for S&T Policy, Co-Director of Institute for SDGs. His teaching and research interests include STI policy, crisis management, and global governance.

Dr. Xue also serves as the Counsellor of the State Council, Co-Convener of the Discipline Evaluation Group Public Administration of the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council, the Chair of the National Expert Committee on the Governance of Next Generation of AI, a member of the Standing Committee of Chinese Association of Science and Technology. He is an adjunct professor at Carnegie Mellon University, a Non-Resident Senior Fellow of the Brookings Institution, a board member of the UN Sustainable Development Solution Network (SDSN), a member of the Committee of the Experts on Public Administration (CEPA) and the inaugural Internet Governance Forum (IGF) Leadership Panel.

Dr. Xue is a recipient of Distinguished Young Scholar Award from National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), Cheung Kong Chair Distinguished Professor of the Ministry of Education, the Fudan Distinguished Contribution Award for Management Science, the Distinguished Contribution Award from Chinese Association for Science of Science and S&T Policy, and the Second National Award for Excellence in Innovation.

谢幸(Xing Xie)

Senior Principal Research Manager,

Microsoft Research Asia

Dr. Xing Xie is currently a senior principal research manager of Microsoft Research Asia, and a guest Ph.D. advisor at the University of Science and Technology of China. He received his B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science from the University of Science and Technology of China in 1996 and 2001, respectively. He joined Microsoft Research Asia in July 2001, working on data mining, social computing and responsible AI. During the past years, he has published over 400 papers, won the IEEE MDM 2023 test-of-time award, the ACM SIGKDD 2022 test-of-time award, the ACM SIGKDD China 2021 test of time award, the 10-year impact award honorable mention in ACM SIGSPATIAL 2020, the 10-year impact award in ACM SIGSPATIAL 2019, the best student paper award in KDD 2016, and the best paper awards in ICDM 2013 and UIC 2010. He currently serves on the editorial boards of ACM Transactions on Recommender Systems, ACM Transactions on Social Computing, ACM Transactions on Intelligent Systems and Technology, CCF Transactions on Pervasive Computing and Interaction. He is a Fellow of China Computer Federation and the IEEE, and a Distinguished Member of ACM.

Who can attend this event?

This event is open to currently enrolled Tsinghua University students, both undergraduate and graduate, as well as faculty and staff currently employed by Tsinghua University. Our venue can accommodate up to 200 seats for Tsinghua classmates and colleagues.

What is required to join this event?

All guests must present a valid registration from this website (Bag Event 百格活动)as well as a valid Tsinghua University ID Card in order to access Schwarzman College for this event.

Entering and Exiting Schwarzman College

Registered attendees can enter Schwarzman College 30 minutes before the session begins. For this session, doors open at 6:30 pm. No attendees will be admitted after 7:20 pm.

Following the conclusion of this event, Schwarzman College is closed to visitors as it is a residential building (student dorm). We ask that all Tsinghua classmates and colleagues who join us for the session exit the building when our session concludes at around 8:15 pm. All guests' cooperation is greatly appreciated.
